On September 1, Massachusetts will hold state primary elections for a range of offices, including U.S. Senator. Sen. Ed Markey, a Democrat, currently holds the seat.
According to the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office, John Deaton will appear on the Republican primary ballot. Ed Markey and Seth Moulton will appear on the Democratic primary ballot. Candidates running as independents or with third parties such as Morgan Dawicki and Joe Tache, will not appear on ballots until the general election in November.
During the late spring and early summer, The Scope’s Chloe Craft interviewed a number of the candidates running to serve as senator for Massachusetts, asking them about their interest in politics and what they hope to accomplish if elected. Four candidates who will appear on the primary ballot or the general election ballot agreed to our interview request:
The Scope interviewed Alex Rikleen but he suspended his campaign before publication. Incumbent Ed Markey declined interview requests. Candidates William Gates, Nathan Bech, Philip Devincentis, and Shiva Ayyadurai did not respond to requests for interviews.
The deadline to register to vote in the state primary election is August 22. Register to vote or check your registration information on the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website.
