Mail-in Voting in Boston – How Does it Work?

Ha Ta, Editor

Voting by mail is available to all voters for all elections in 2020 thanks to a new law in Massachusetts prompted by COVID-19 safety concerns. Registered voters do not need an excuse to vote by mail in the state primary and the November general election this year.

You must be a registered voter to cast a ballot. The last day to register to vote for the 2020 election in Massachusetts is Saturday, Oct. 24, by 8 p.m. Learn how to register to vote online, by mail or in person here. Check your registration status here.

Mail-in Ballot

The City of Boston said in July, it sent applications to vote with a mail-in ballot for the 2020 elections to registered voters in Boston. If you didn’t receive it, you can download the application, available in four languages, from the Boston.gov with the links below.

Massachusetts voters can now request a mail-in ballot online instead of mailing a ballot application to their local election office.

Important Notes

Sign your application. The application will be invalid without your signature.

Postage has been paid — drop the application in the mail or drop it off in the Election Department drop box located in the City Hall.

Deadlines

Applications to get a mail in ballot must be received by Oct. 28.

Absentee Ballots

If you have already applied for an Absentee Ballot, you do not need to fill out an application for a mail-in ballot.

In-person Voting

In-person voting will remain an option for all 255 precincts, according to the Boston Election Department.

The City of Boston said this year’s poll workers will be trained on COVID-19 protocols including social distancing, sanitizing procedures, and the proper use of personal protective equipment.

Early Voting

Any voter registered in Boston can vote at any early voting location without an excuse or reason to vote early:
